It is (presently) a little-known historical fact that the Maori Rangatira did not cede Sovereignty to the British Crown in 1840…
The Waitangi Tribunal has acknowledged this as per the following couple of pertinent quotes from the above Waitangi Tribunal hyperlink:
“The rangatira who signed te Tiriti o Waitangi in February 1840 did not cede sovereignty to the British Crown, the Waitangi Tribunal has concluded.”
“The Tribunal said nothing about how and when the Crown acquired the sovereignty that it exercises today. However, it said, the Crown ‘did not acquire that sovereignty through an informed cession by the rangatira who signed te Tiriti at Waitangi, Waimate, and Mangungu’.”
He Wakaputanga 1835…
Prior to 1840 the Maori Rangatira had already declared their Sovereignty over Nu Tireni (New Zealand) in He Wakaputanga 1835 (which included ALL people who were coming to Nu Tireni) and King William IV of Great Britain had already acknowledged this; and previously, in 1834, had already acknowledged Te Kara (the de jure flag of Nu Tireni)…
He Wakaputanga 1835 states that only the Maori Rangatira (or their delegated representatives) have authority to frame laws in Nu Tireni (New Zealand)…
